Big Changes Coming

General NewsHi all,

I've got some news to share with you. In 2016, the laws in the US changed regarding the costs associated with licensing for internet broadcasters. You can read all about those changes here:

What this means to us is that to be compliant, Armitunes must pay a licensing fee based on the number songs streamed to each listener in the US. At the time of this writing, that figure is approximate $1500 USD per month at the new 2016 rates. We have already been contacted regarding compliance and risk legal action if we do not pay the licensing fees.

As a free, non-ad supported radio, it is not possible to cover the cost of licensing. This leaves a few options including geo-blocking all US-based listeners, or ceasing streaming altogether. Because listeners in the US account for at least half of the site's traffic, I have decided geo-blocking isn't a good option.

What we are left with, then, is to cease streaming. The stream will be terminated within the next 30 days. After that, the website and domain will be transferred in their entirety to Raychan, who will have the option of bootstrapping the stream with his own music library and taking over all ownership and operations of the site. For legal purposes, our existing music library will not be shared.

What this means for you is that the site and steam will be down for an unknown period of time. When the site returns under Raychan's direction, your user accounts, messages, etc. will all be preserved. Your favorites list will be intact, but the songs may no longer be available for request.

What can you do to help? Check out this petition to oppose the copyright board's decision to increase rates for low/no income webcasters:

Thank you all for being members of the Armitunes community throughout the years. I am touched and humbled that you have decided to make this place part of your digital home on the web for over a decade. I know the site will be in good hands with Raychan and hope that the friendships that have formed here will survive and thrive for years to come. It has been an honor.

Big Changes Coming

While AD may be changing, like you said, the friendships will last.
I am comforted to know that the site is not going away completely but just being revamped or remimagined if you will.
I will miss it while it's in transition but look forward to it coming back.
And of course, I am happy to maintain my moderator status if Raychan would like the help.
I hope we all sign the petition as this is not fair to those who host simple sites like this one. I understand the compliance issue but sites like this are so much more than just simple radio stations so impositions such as this one can affect so much more. :/
Anyway, may the future of AD remain bright. I know I will keep a diligent eye out for its return. ^_^ Now and in the future...Happy Listening!!

Big Changes Coming

Ah, well, I've always thought that something like this would happen someday. I'm certainly glad there will be a future and I know Raychan is capable. Even so, it's still an emotional occasion.

AD has indeed been my cyber-home. It has been a permanent part of my browser sessions since I've found it, even if my own participation has fluctuated, it has always been there. It is the first community that I joined on the Internet and thus is directly responsible for how I perceive certain things and for really opening me up to the Internet on a larger scale, and I can say that some of the most significant things in my life started here. I fell in love for the first time here, and fell in love again and now live in France because of the connections AD made possible. I know that such a situation isn't unique here either.

I've mentioned it before, but I've been wanting to thank you properly, so thank you for having run AD, Matt. I'm truly grateful for it. My life as I know it is so only because of AD, and it is not a bad life at all.

Tonight, I shall drink to AD – to what has been and to what shall be.

But let me say… if I behave… can you arrange a spacious hole in the ground? Somewhere nice, make it nice, where the land meets high tide.

I have not been registered for that long, but I really enjoyed meeting nice people online and having good, funny, silly or even serious conversations while listening to the great music. I agree that it is more than just a regular radio station; it is a community, even though the Chatterblock activity has declined.

I honestly really appreciate all the time and effort you put into running the site.

Thank you very much!

Wish you all the best for the future!

Oh wow...
I've been listening to AD for years now.
I didn't participate that much in the comunity. Only the ocasional shoutbox thanks for some great feelings from time to time.
I just hope that things don't change that much... As I really don't know what my life would be without AD.
AD has been with me during all the long work hours, during my time in front of the pc at home...

I just hope for the best.

Also, thanks a lot for keeping this up all this time!

You will never know if you do not take the chance.

This truly is infuriating. I have signed the petition and have taken it to social media via my page and the page of the technology company I work for. This is just horrid and ridiculous. There are some of us that have met on this page and have formed real life friendships that will last forever. This is total and complete crap and I'm frustrated seeing as this will kill about 4 different stations I enjoy listening to. I will always be a loyal Armitunes listener and fan. But as it sounds. More just a friend and fan. I'm hoping this can be resolved.

I will really miss this site. I listen to AD at work and sometimes at home playing MMO games.

Thanks Matt for keeping it up and running for so long and the Raychan for taking it over. When Raychan takes it over will it have the same domain or will it be on a different one and how will we know it will be back up and running again.

Sad that this is happening to our great community.

Is there a way to host the radio outside of US?

Sad days ahead

I'm truly going to miss this place, no matter what happens to it. I always loved it just the way it is now. I've fluctuated from a casual to avid listener over the years, but have always had the comfort of knowing AT was here for me whenever I needed it.
Thank you so much for keeping things running the way you did. I appreciate all the effort you put into it over the years. AT is special and one of a kind.I look forward to a future of some kind for this place of comfort.

Can we not donate to keep it up? Or just cut off america. People can use proxies to get around this.
